The COVID-19 pandemic has turned out to be one of the deadliest disease outbreaks in recent times—causing disruptions in almost every facet of our lives. The discovery of vaccines, however, halted the spread of the virus around the world.  While the world was steadily recovering from the delta variant of the virus, the newly found ‘Omicron’ variant has prompted a new, alarming concern for countries around the world.

First detected in South Africa, the Omicron variant has quickly started spreading across other countries as well. Alongside a major stock market drop and renewed international travel bans, the new variant is anticipated to have a lot more impacts threatening the world. Recently, WHO has called omicron “A Variant of Concern.” Amid all the speculations and talks, here is all you need to know about the new variant.

The Onset

As per WHO, the earliest-known case of the omicron variant was detected on November 9, and the first mutation was detected on November 24. While the delta variant still accounts for a majority of COVID cases around the world, the onset of the omicron variant has coincided with a surge in cases in South Africa—with a whopping 1400 percent increase over the past couple of weeks.

Mutations and Transmissibility

There are several different opinions on the transmissibility of the new variant. According to early evidence, the omicron variant of the virus is even more contagious than the delta variant. The new variant has more than 30 mutations on the spike protein—a part of the virus that binds to a human cell and infects it. Thus, omicron is anticipated to be more transmissible and has more potential to evade the immunity provided by the vaccines.

Dr. Anthony Fauci (Director of NIAID U.S.) believes that the virus will spread all over the world by saying, “When you have a virus showing this degree of transmissibility & you are having travel-related cases, it almost invariably is going to go all over.”

WHO, however, counters this argument by saying it is not yet clear whether omicron is more transmissible compared to other variants including Delta.  Although cases in South Africa have risen significantly, epidemiologic studies are underway to understand if it is due to omicron or some other factors.

Symptoms and Severity

According to an advisory by WHO, it is not clear whether the infection with Omicron causes more severe diseases compared to the infections from other variants. Moreover, there is no strong evidence to prove that the symptoms associated with Omicron are different from those with the other variants. Although the initial infections were found primarily among younger university students who tend to have more mild diseases, WHO adds that understanding the level of the severity as well as symptoms of the variant will take days to several weeks. Moreover, preliminary evidence suggests there may be an increased risk of reinfection with Omicron as compared to the other variants.

The Potency of the Vaccine and Tests

As there is still a lot to be discovered about the Omicron variant, it will take time to understand if the existing vaccines are effective against the same. However, leading vaccine manufacturers like Moderna and Pfizer have announced that they already have plans in place to adapt their vaccine if necessary.  Johnson &Johnson and AstraZeneca are also investigating and testing the new variant.

Enunciating his views on the latest developments of the virus, Stephane Bancel (CEO of Moderna) said, “From the beginning, we have said that as we seek to defeat the pandemic, it is imperative that we are proactive as the virus evolves. The mutations in the Omicron variant are concerning and for several days, we have been moving as fast as possible to execute our strategy to address this variant.”

Furthermore, WHO has stated that the widely used PCR tests continue to detect the COVID infection including Omicron as well. Studies are ongoing to determine whether there is any impact on other types of tests, including rapid antigen detection tests.

Ongoing Studies

Presently, WHO is collaborating with several researchers and institutes around the world to extract more information about the virus. Moreover, WHO is encouraging countries to contribute to the collection and sharing of hospitalized patient data through its WHO COVID-19 Clinical Data Platform.

The platform aims to rapidly describe clinical characteristics and patient outcomes, assess the variations in the clinical characteristics and describe the temporary trends in clinical characteristics of COVID-19. WHO continues to evaluate and monitor the data as it becomes available. It will also assess how mutations in the Omicron variant affect the behavior of the virus.

Countries’ Response

The USA recently announced travel restrictions on eight Southern African countries including Lesotho, South Africa, Eswatini, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, and Botswana. Other countries like the UK, Germany, Australia, France, etc. are also imposing travel restrictions on southern African nations to curb the spread of the new variant.

How to Negate the Threat?

In the recently published advisory, WHO has suggested several precautionary measures one must take to avoid infection with the latest variant. According to the advisory, the most effective step an individual can take to curb the spread of the virus is to keep a physical distance of at least 1 meter from others. It also advises to wear a well-fitting mask, open windows to improve ventilation, avoid poorly ventilated or crowded spaces, keep hands clean, cough or sneeze into a bent elbow or tissue, and get vaccinated as soon as one is eligible.

NASA’s latest VERITAS

Venus, which was previously considered as an abode for life, is infamously hot today. According to previous scientific arguments, the climatic conditions of Venus supported the possibility of life. The planet had huge oceans and a clement climate that might have persisted for several billions of years. Currently, Venus harbors a bone-dry surface which makes the existence of life impossible.

In a recent study, scientists argued that life on Venus has never been possible. The planet’s climatic conditions and cycles did not support the possibility of life.

Unsupportive Clement Conditions on Venus

On 13 October 2021, the latest study on the possibility of life on Venus was published in the journal Nature. The study was authored by a group of scientists led by Martin Turbet, a postdoctoral researcher at the Geneva Astronomical Observatory in Switzerland, who simulated the climate of ancient Venus using a new model. The study showed different results.

Turbot and his team discovered that conditions on the young Venus possibly limited the clouds to the planet’s nightside, where they presented no use in the establishment of life. As Venus is not tidally locked to the sun, it does not have a permanent nightside. (Nightside refers to the particular hemisphere that happens to be facing away from the sun at the time.)

These clouds did not bounce the sunlight away but warmed the planet’s surface through a greenhouse effect and resulted in trapping enormous heat. As a result, Venus did not cool down enough to initiate rainfall and for the water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and oceans to form.

The Study of Tesserae

According to astronomers James Kasting and Chester Harman, of Penn State University and NASA’s Ames Research Center, respectively, “If the authors are correct, Venus was always a hellhole.” As per the study, a more in-depth study of the Venusian surface could help throw some clarity on the planet’s ancient climate.

Kasting and Harman pointed toward the ‘highly deformed regions’ of the planet known as tesserae, which are considered to be similar in composition to continental rocks on Earth. They further added, “On our planet, such rocks form by metamorphic processes (in which minerals change form without melting) that occur in the presence of liquid water. If the tesserae turn out instead to be basaltic, like normal seafloor on Earth, liquid water would not have been needed to generate them, further supporting Turbet and colleagues’ hypothesis.” Scheduled to launch in 2028, NASA’s latest VERITAS (Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography and Spectroscopy) will help accumulate information and study the tesserae from orbit. However, as per Kasting and Harman, it may take a while for the Venus lander to get a firm understanding of the intriguing Venusian features.

WHO greenlights world’s first malaria vaccine

Following a successful pilot trial involving over one million children, the World Health Organization (WHO) is now proposing that the world’s first malaria vaccine be used widely throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. It is believed that the groundbreaking vaccination would save the lives of tens of thousands of youngsters in the coming years.

RTS,S/AS01 (or, more lately, Mosquirix) is the result of more than 30 years of study. Following extensive clinical testing, a major pilot study to further confirm the vaccine’s effectiveness began in 2019.

More than 800,000 children were immunized as part of the pilot program, which covered Malawi, Ghana, and Kenya. The malaria vaccine is safe and effective, according to a recent WHO review of the continuing pilot trial. The assessment also discovered that when scaled up to large populations, the potentially complicated four-dose schedule is a workable methodology.

“This is a historic moment,” said World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who began his medical career as a malaria researcher. “The long-awaited malaria vaccine for children is a scientific, child health, and malaria control breakthrough.” Using this vaccination in addition to existing malaria prevention methods might save tens of thousands of child lives each year.”

Validated safety

Malaria kills about 260,000 children in Africa alone each year. Concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of RTS,S/AS01, with studies revealing that it only prevents infection in 40% of cases and lowers severe malaria by 30%. Even if its efficiency is just moderate, a vaccination like this may avert a considerable quantity of mortality and sickness.

The malaria vaccine’s safety profile has also been validated by a large pilot study over the last few years. Researchers can now confirm that the vaccination is not associated with any previously suspected side effects, such as meningitis, after administering over 2.3 million doses.

Developing funding strategies for distribution

The next difficulty will be to distribute the malaria vaccine across the African continent. Each country’s malaria control body will decide whether and how to roll out the vaccine, while the WHO will collaborate with global health organizations such as UNICEF, Unitaid, The Global Fund, and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, to develop funding strategies to ensure the vaccine is distributed efficiently and equitably.

“This vaccination is a welcome new tool that, when combined with current programs like bed nets, has the potential to drive down malaria and expand protection to children across Africa,” says Philippe Duneton, executive director of Unitaid. “Pilot implementation has shown how we can reach children equitably with this life-saving vaccine — now we need to secure enough and cheap supplies to properly reignite the battle against malaria.”

Leading a young university

The University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) is a private, not-for-profit institution of higher education. Its roots trace back to the Center for Research and Communication (CRC), which was established 54 years ago. He adds, “I also pursue new fields of knowledge—cultural, professional, academic, spiritual—and acquire more skills (i.e., use of software in simulation, teaching, etc.). I have come to appreciate family and prayer life even more.”

Time for collaboration

Dr. Padojinog believes that leadership in the education sector has drastically changed. He thinks that in addition to academic reputation and qualifications, the university leader must have the experience and capability to manage an enterprise, promote closer collaboration between the academe and its stakeholders and other universities, and many more. He continues, “Academic leaders must possess a multidisciplinary, collaborative, and global outlook in their planning and execution.”

Protecting Susceptible patients

A novel monoclonal antibody treatment that protects chronically ill adults from COVID-19 has been discovered. The results of the Phase 3 trial show that the new antibody cocktail, administered by intramuscular injection, might provide protection for up to 12 months.

Antibodies are the front-line troops of our immune system. They continually circulate about a body, looking for the virus they’ve been trained to seek for.

In early 2020, Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers focused on a few of especially powerful antibodies obtained from some of the first COVID-19 patients. AstraZeneca, a pharmaceutical firm, licensed the antibodies and developed monoclonal antibody therapies to prevent symptomatic COVID-19 infections.

The new therapy is known as AZD7442, and according to AstraZeneca’s recent clinical trial results, it might play a key role in protecting the most susceptible from severe COVID-19.

The Provent Trial

The findings of a trial named Provent, which began in late 2020, were just announced by the firm. The study included approximately 5,000 people, with a focus on those who were most at risk of developing severe COVID-19, either because of a chronic pre-existing disease or because they were immunocompromised.

The new findings are based on a preliminary analysis of the recently finished study and have not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a journal. The trial found no occurrences of severe COVID-19 or mortality in individuals who received AZD7442 after a six-month follow-up period. In contrast, the placebo group experienced three severe COVID-19 instances, two of which resulted in death.

According to AstraZeneca, 25 symptomatic COVID-19 instances were found in the entire study group. AZD7442 was shown to lower the probability of symptomatic COVID-19 by 77% in chronically sick people.

Although Provent is not the first clinical trial to examine AZD7442, it is the first to produce encouraging results. Storm Chaser, another experiment, just failed to reach its primary objective.

Long-term Effectiveness

One of the features that distinguish this medication from other recent monoclonal antibody therapies under consideration for COVID-19 is the ease with which it may be administered through intramuscular injection. The potential for long-term effectiveness of this monoclonal antibody therapy is another unique characteristic.

AstraZeneca sought to improve the half-life of these monoclonal antibodies, and preliminary research suggests that a single therapy might provide effective protection for up to a year. The Provent trial’s preliminary data analysis comprises six months of follow-up, with another nine months of observation to come.

Discovery of Glycan Gates

Scientists have been pursuing the mysteries of the processes that allow the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to penetrate and infect healthy human cells since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.

Rommie Amaro, a computational biophysical chemist at the University of California San Diego, helped build a comprehensive picture of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that efficiently hooks onto human cell receptors early in the pandemic.

Now, Amaro and her colleagues from UC San Diego, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Texas at Austin, Columbia University, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have discovered how glycans—molecules that make up a sugary residue around the spike protein’s edges—act as infection gateways.

Amaro, along with co-senior author Lillian Chong of the University of Pittsburgh, first author and UC San Diego graduate student Terra Sztain, and co-first author and UC San Diego postdoctoral scholar Surl-Hee Ahn, published a study in the journal Nature Chemistry on August 19 that describes the discovery of glycan “gates” that open to allow SARS-CoV-2 entry.

Solving the infection puzzle

According to Amaro, the study team’s gate finding might lead to novel treatments to combat SARS-CoV-2 illness. The virus is successfully stopped from opening to entrance and infection if glycan gates can be pharmacologically locked in the closed state.

The spike’s glycan coating deceives the human immune system by seeming to be nothing more than a sugary residue. Previous technologies that scanned these structures showed glycans in static open or closed states, which didn’t pique scientists’ curiosity at first. The researchers used supercomputing models to create dynamic videos that showed glycan gates activating from one location to another, providing an unprecedented piece of the infection puzzle.

The computationally complex simulations were initially conducted on Comet at UC San Diego’s San Diego Supercomputer Center, then on Longhorn at UT Austin’s Texas Advanced Computing Center. The researchers were able to get atomic-level images of the spike protein receptor-binding domain, or RBD, from over 300 different angles because of this computer capacity. Glycan “N343” was discovered to be the linchpin that pries the RBD from the “down” to the “up” position, allowing access to the ACE2 receptor on the host cell. N343 glycan activation is compared to a “molecular crowbar” process by the researchers.

Jason McLellan, an associate professor of molecular biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, and his colleagues produced spike protein variants and examined how the absence of the glycan gate affected the RBD’s capacity to open.

“We showed that without this gate, the RBD of the spike protein can’t take the conformation it needs to infect cells,” McLellan said.

As 2021 is Kentucky State’s 135th anniversary, the University is celebrating in a big way.

After navigating the effects of a global pandemic for the last year to deliver access to education, Kentucky State University has more reasons than ever to celebrate its 135th anniversary as an institution of higher education.

The pinnacle of the celebration was a panel of some of Kentucky State University’s living past presidents, moderated by KET’s Renee Shaw. Past interim president Dr. Aaron Thompson provided introductions for current president, Dr. M. Christopher Brown II; past president Dr. Mary Evans Sias and past president Raymond M. Burse. Dr. William H. Turner provided words for the occasion. Author Dr. John A. Hardin spoke about his recently released book, “The Pursuit of Excellence: Kentucky State University, 1886-2020.”

Hardin’s book examines the University’s history from its early days when it was an idea to the high-water marks and present-day achievements that propel the institution forward. The book carries readers through each name change of the institution, from the first days as the State Normal School for Colored Persons with three teachers and 55 students to today’s Kentucky State University with 160 faculty and 2,300 students.

The panel discussion covered a broad range of topics including what each president considers his or her greatest accomplishment at Kentucky State; the challenges of being a president in higher education; the importance of working with political leaders; fundraising; the legacy of Rufus Ballard Atwood; and the future of Kentucky State.

Another part of the 135th anniversary celebration is a new partnership with the iconic Kentucky soda brand, Ale-8-One Bottling Company. Ale-8-One, local producer of Kentucky’s original ginger and citrus soft drink sold in their signature green glass bottles, is also celebrating its 95th anniversary this year. Kentucky State and Ale-8-One will highlight the partnership with a series of collaborations throughout the year.

Special recognitions at Founder’s Day and Homecoming and Homecoming will recognize the anniversary, as well as the 135th Green and Gold Gala.

From its modest beginnings as a small normal school for the training of African American teachers, Kentucky State University has grown into a land-grant and liberal arts institution that prepares a diverse student population to compete in a multifaceted, ever-changing global society.

Today, Kentucky State University is led by its 18th president, Dr. M. Christopher Brown II. It is a public institution with an enrollment of approximately 2,300 students and 160 full-time faculty members.
