]]>The COVID-19 pandemic has turned out to be one of the deadliest disease outbreaks in recent times—causing disruptions in almost every facet of our lives. The discovery of vaccines, however, halted the spread of the virus around the world. While the world was steadily recovering from the delta variant of the virus, the newly found ‘Omicron’ variant has prompted a new, alarming concern for countries around the world.
First detected in South Africa, the Omicron variant has quickly started spreading across other countries as well. Alongside a major stock market drop and renewed international travel bans, the new variant is anticipated to have a lot more impacts threatening the world. Recently, WHO has called omicron “A Variant of Concern.” Amid all the speculations and talks, here is all you need to know about the new variant.
The Onset
As per WHO, the earliest-known case of the omicron variant was detected on November 9, and the first mutation was detected on November 24. While the delta variant still accounts for a majority of COVID cases around the world, the onset of the omicron variant has coincided with a surge in cases in South Africa—with a whopping 1400 percent increase over the past couple of weeks.
Mutations and Transmissibility
There are several different opinions on the transmissibility of the new variant. According to early evidence, the omicron variant of the virus is even more contagious than the delta variant. The new variant has more than 30 mutations on the spike protein—a part of the virus that binds to a human cell and infects it. Thus, omicron is anticipated to be more transmissible and has more potential to evade the immunity provided by the vaccines.
Dr. Anthony Fauci (Director of NIAID U.S.) believes that the virus will spread all over the world by saying, “When you have a virus showing this degree of transmissibility & you are having travel-related cases, it almost invariably is going to go all over.”
WHO, however, counters this argument by saying it is not yet clear whether omicron is more transmissible compared to other variants including Delta. Although cases in South Africa have risen significantly, epidemiologic studies are underway to understand if it is due to omicron or some other factors.
Symptoms and Severity
According to an advisory by WHO, it is not clear whether the infection with Omicron causes more severe diseases compared to the infections from other variants. Moreover, there is no strong evidence to prove that the symptoms associated with Omicron are different from those with the other variants. Although the initial infections were found primarily among younger university students who tend to have more mild diseases, WHO adds that understanding the level of the severity as well as symptoms of the variant will take days to several weeks. Moreover, preliminary evidence suggests there may be an increased risk of reinfection with Omicron as compared to the other variants.
The Potency of the Vaccine and Tests
As there is still a lot to be discovered about the Omicron variant, it will take time to understand if the existing vaccines are effective against the same. However, leading vaccine manufacturers like Moderna and Pfizer have announced that they already have plans in place to adapt their vaccine if necessary. Johnson &Johnson and AstraZeneca are also investigating and testing the new variant.
Enunciating his views on the latest developments of the virus, Stephane Bancel (CEO of Moderna) said, “From the beginning, we have said that as we seek to defeat the pandemic, it is imperative that we are proactive as the virus evolves. The mutations in the Omicron variant are concerning and for several days, we have been moving as fast as possible to execute our strategy to address this variant.”
Furthermore, WHO has stated that the widely used PCR tests continue to detect the COVID infection including Omicron as well. Studies are ongoing to determine whether there is any impact on other types of tests, including rapid antigen detection tests.
Ongoing Studies
Presently, WHO is collaborating with several researchers and institutes around the world to extract more information about the virus. Moreover, WHO is encouraging countries to contribute to the collection and sharing of hospitalized patient data through its WHO COVID-19 Clinical Data Platform.
The platform aims to rapidly describe clinical characteristics and patient outcomes, assess the variations in the clinical characteristics and describe the temporary trends in clinical characteristics of COVID-19. WHO continues to evaluate and monitor the data as it becomes available. It will also assess how mutations in the Omicron variant affect the behavior of the virus.
Countries’ Response
The USA recently announced travel restrictions on eight Southern African countries including Lesotho, South Africa, Eswatini, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, and Botswana. Other countries like the UK, Germany, Australia, France, etc. are also imposing travel restrictions on southern African nations to curb the spread of the new variant.
How to Negate the Threat?
In the recently published advisory, WHO has suggested several precautionary measures one must take to avoid infection with the latest variant. According to the advisory, the most effective step an individual can take to curb the spread of the virus is to keep a physical distance of at least 1 meter from others. It also advises to wear a well-fitting mask, open windows to improve ventilation, avoid poorly ventilated or crowded spaces, keep hands clean, cough or sneeze into a bent elbow or tissue, and get vaccinated as soon as one is eligible.
With new information coming out each day, we can soon anticipate a clearer picture of the new variant and its impacts as well as probable solutions. ]]>A professor of industrial economics and strategic management, Dr. Padojinog possesses extensive experience and research in the field as an industry economist, business strategist, and business sustainability economist. As an important personality within the university, he ensures to nurture the academic values of UA&P and pivot it towards growth and development.
Dr. Padojinog has worked with a variety of experts and organizations, namely industry associations, policymaking bodies, and companies for their industry policy, corporate strategy, and many more. He holds an impressive portfolio as an education leader and has spoken on various international and local forums to discuss important issues and policies. Moreover, he has also been a part of several non-government organizations that promote good governance and education for the less privileged.
Dr. Winston is also a founding member of the Center for Excellence in Governance, an umbrella organization that oversees other not-for-profit good governance outfits. He obtained his primary education in 1980 from the Colegio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus and secondary education in 1984 from the University of the Philippines (UP) Visayas.
In 1989, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree double majors in Economics and Management from UP Visayas as a student scholar. He earned his master’s degree in Industrial Economics at the Center for Research and Communication, and his Doctor of Business Administration degree in 2009 at the De La Salle University Graduate School of Business. In the same year, he pursued the International Faculty Program of the IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.
Before being appointed as the 4th President of UA&P, Dr. Padojinog served in various posts, namely, School Secretary and Vice Dean of the School of Economics and Dean of the School of Management.
As president of UA&P, Dr. Padojinog’s primary roles revolve around several spheres of the university. These include the pursuit of the university’s mandate, the preservation and promotion of its spirit and identity, the execution and monitoring of university strategies, and the development of the next generation of university leaders.
The University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) is a private, not-for-profit institution of higher education. Its roots trace back to the Center for Research and Communication (CRC), which was established 54 years ago. The CRC commenced as a think tank conducting research and offering graduate courses in economics and management. It gradually expanded its educational activities to other fields. In 1995, it was granted university status by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and since then has become known as the University of Asia and the Pacific. In 2017, CHED officially granted autonomous status to UA&P.
Located in Metro Manila, UA&P has a population of 2,025 undergraduate and graduate students, with 335 full-time employees. To date, the University has produced more than 9,237 alumni, including those who graduated from CRC.

]]>Scientists have been pursuing the mysteries of the processes that allow the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to penetrate and infect healthy human cells since the beginning of the COVID pandemic.
Rommie Amaro, a computational biophysical chemist at the University of California San Diego, helped build a comprehensive picture of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that efficiently hooks onto human cell receptors early in the pandemic.
Now, Amaro and her colleagues from UC San Diego, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Texas at Austin, Columbia University, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have discovered how glycans—molecules that make up a sugary residue around the spike protein’s edges—act as infection gateways.
Amaro, along with co-senior author Lillian Chong of the University of Pittsburgh, first author and UC San Diego graduate student Terra Sztain, and co-first author and UC San Diego postdoctoral scholar Surl-Hee Ahn, published a study in the journal Nature Chemistry on August 19 that describes the discovery of glycan “gates” that open to allow SARS-CoV-2 entry.
According to Amaro, the study team’s gate finding might lead to novel treatments to combat SARS-CoV-2 illness. The virus is successfully stopped from opening to entrance and infection if glycan gates can be pharmacologically locked in the closed state.
The spike’s glycan coating deceives the human immune system by seeming to be nothing more than a sugary residue. Previous technologies that scanned these structures showed glycans in static open or closed states, which didn’t pique scientists’ curiosity at first. The researchers used supercomputing models to create dynamic videos that showed glycan gates activating from one location to another, providing an unprecedented piece of the infection puzzle.
The computationally complex simulations were initially conducted on Comet at UC San Diego’s San Diego Supercomputer Center, then on Longhorn at UT Austin’s Texas Advanced Computing Center. The researchers were able to get atomic-level images of the spike protein receptor-binding domain, or RBD, from over 300 different angles because of this computer capacity. Glycan “N343” was discovered to be the linchpin that pries the RBD from the “down” to the “up” position, allowing access to the ACE2 receptor on the host cell. N343 glycan activation is compared to a “molecular crowbar” process by the researchers.
Jason McLellan, an associate professor of molecular biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, and his colleagues produced spike protein variants and examined how the absence of the glycan gate affected the RBD’s capacity to open.
“We showed that without this gate, the RBD of the spike protein can’t take the conformation it needs to infect cells,” McLellan said.

As 2021 is Kentucky State’s 135th anniversary, the University is celebrating in a big way.
After navigating the effects of a global pandemic for the last year to deliver access to education, Kentucky State University has more reasons than ever to celebrate its 135th anniversary as an institution of higher education.
The pinnacle of the celebration was a panel of some of Kentucky State University’s living past presidents, moderated by KET’s Renee Shaw. Past interim president Dr. Aaron Thompson provided introductions for current president, Dr. M. Christopher Brown II; past president Dr. Mary Evans Sias and past president Raymond M. Burse. Dr. William H. Turner provided words for the occasion. Author Dr. John A. Hardin spoke about his recently released book, “The Pursuit of Excellence: Kentucky State University, 1886-2020.”
Hardin’s book examines the University’s history from its early days when it was an idea to the high-water marks and present-day achievements that propel the institution forward. The book carries readers through each name change of the institution, from the first days as the State Normal School for Colored Persons with three teachers and 55 students to today’s Kentucky State University with 160 faculty and 2,300 students.
The panel discussion covered a broad range of topics including what each president considers his or her greatest accomplishment at Kentucky State; the challenges of being a president in higher education; the importance of working with political leaders; fundraising; the legacy of Rufus Ballard Atwood; and the future of Kentucky State.
Another part of the 135th anniversary celebration is a new partnership with the iconic Kentucky soda brand, Ale-8-One Bottling Company. Ale-8-One, local producer of Kentucky’s original ginger and citrus soft drink sold in their signature green glass bottles, is also celebrating its 95th anniversary this year. Kentucky State and Ale-8-One will highlight the partnership with a series of collaborations throughout the year.
Special recognitions at Founder’s Day and Homecoming and Homecoming will recognize the anniversary, as well as the 135th Green and Gold Gala.
From its modest beginnings as a small normal school for the training of African American teachers, Kentucky State University has grown into a land-grant and liberal arts institution that prepares a diverse student population to compete in a multifaceted, ever-changing global society.
Today, Kentucky State University is led by its 18th president, Dr. M. Christopher Brown II. It is a public institution with an enrollment of approximately 2,300 students and 160 full-time faculty members. The University’s diverse mix of faculty, staff, and students has made Kentucky State the most diverse public institution in the Commonwealth, and among the most diverse nationwide.

]]>COVID-19 making the parents doubtful about the physical teaching. Parents are not believing the education officials in terms of safety and hygiene. They don’t have proper facilities. Some of the parents are deciding to send their students to catholic schools. Many of these instances show a breakdown in trust between parents or teachers and the schools. The three major precautions are wearing masks, adequate spacing between students, and ventilation which is not followed by the school in a proper manner.

Relational trust is one of the important elements of trust. It is described by sociologists Anthony Bryk and Barbara Schneider. Relational confidence is concerned with the degree to which people perceive the sense of intention around them. It also shows whether they can trust the individuals on which they depend to have the necessary motives, knowledge, and honesty to work for the common good. In the pandemic, it has become clear that educators and students often work and study in buildings where it is necessary to main especially the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. But it is not like that schools’ physical condition is critical. A large body of evidence has found that the school atmosphere affects both student academic performance and student wellbeing.
Biden administration pushed states to prioritize vaccines for teachers and other school employees in early March 2021 to gain relational trust. At the end of the month, all teachers in 46 states and the District of Columbia were registered for vaccinations. Americans insist on the importance of vaccinating educators in a February nationwide poll. 59 percent of polled American adults said that schools could not reopen until all teachers have had the opportunity to be vaccinated.
Us government is investing US$45 billion to eliminate waste sources such as lead-lined pipes from schools and day-care centers. With the pandemic raising emphasis on the risks of being indoors, removing lead, asbestos, and other forms of contaminants could aid in the development of relational trust.

However, you will have a continuous reach for the merchandise as the entertainment company is planning to revamp its digital shopping platform to focus majorly on eCommerce.
Disney is one of the World’s largest licensing companies. But after the lockdown was imposed during the Coronavirus Pandemic the sales figure at its retail business fell down by over 7 percent last year due to store closures.
Encountered with such huge losses the upcoming planned business model of Disney seems the only option. Amid the Coronavirus pandemic, the behavior of consumers has shifted drastically towards online shopping for their needs. Few of the major retailers have suffered huge losses, especially those located in shopping malls. Meanwhile, online retailers, such as Amazon have gained profits as consumers became more dependent on them.
The President of Disney’s consumer products games and publishing, Stephanie Young said, “We now plan to create a more flexible, interconnected eCommerce experience that gives consumers easy access to unique, high-quality products across all our franchises.”
There will be numerous new ranges of products including premium home products, apparel for adults, collectibles, and much more. In November last year (2020), Disney has already launched a digital marketplace in Australia, New Zealand, and India.
Disney has not claimed yet about the number of people that will lose their jobs due to this shutdown, but it is expected that over 700 will be left unemployed.

Despite there being a demand for more than 100 microprocessors, the manufacturers were unable to source the chips for all the car industries. One insider calls this the Chipageddon.
The coronavirus pandemic has erupted many businesses and lives. Meanwhile, the automotive industry saw a big dip thereby cutting down on all its orders. However, in the third quarter of 2020, sales of cars created an upsurge and the demand for consumer electronics continued persistently.
The roll-out of the 5G infrastructure has added to the increasing demands. Huawei put in a huge order for building up a stockpile of chips. On the contrary, the car industry maintains a low margin and does not tend to stockpile the chips.
Analyst Richard Windsor put forth, “It takes about 18 to 24 months for a plant to open after they break ground. And even once you’ve built one; you have to tune it and get the yield up, which also takes a bit of time. This isn’t something you can simply switch on and switch off.”
The leading chip producers – TSMC and Samsung are known to have spent billions for attaining a new highly complex 5-nm chip. And many of these chip producers are expected to respond to the extra demand by increasing their prices.

]]>Due to the Coronavirus pandemic that is still in continuation for almost a year now, Art galleries and Museums are under temporary closure. This means no visitors, no cultural events, and thereby no revenue generated at all.
The major investors in Art Funds are generally Insurance companies, University endowments, pension funds, and a few privately-owned financial institutions & firms. The organization that recommends the leadership of institutions across the country “The American Alliance of Museums” stated that after the Coronavirus their members are going through a huge loss of around $30 million in a day.
London’s 40 year-old Florence Nightingale Museum is one of the most known names in the sector of Museums and Galleries. Florence Nightingale Museum is the only museum in the world who’s more than 98% of the revenue is self-developed, by selling tickets and products from their own merchandise. Now it’s obvious that under this pandemic time their source of income/funding is almost zero and this being the major reason this Museum can go under the permanent shutdown.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is an almost 150 year-old Museum in Paris, France. This Museum generates a good amount of revenue on its own, around 70%, and also receives a huge amount of funding from Art funds, endowments, insurance companies & also supported financially by the Government. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has claimed they have suffered a huge loss of around $100 million after the situations caused by Coronavirus as they are not getting even 1/4 amount through various fundings, they used to receive previously.

The Akron Art Museum which is situated in Ohio, United States was first opened in 1922. This Museum is also very much dependent on fundings through Art Funds which they are not getting after the coronavirus, for obvious reasons we all are aware of. According to the CEO Mark Masuoka, they are having an overall revenue loss of around $9, 40,000 from the past year.
The $2.2 trillion of funding was raised under the CARES Act to support the American Museums. According to the report from The Art Funds small and medium cultural institutions will be the ones who will suffer the most in this pandemic. So far the charity has hardly helped 20% of applicants applying for emergency funds.
