Key Highlights:

  • Apple has unveiled its new 16-inch MacBook Pro, which promises an improvement in both appearance and performance.
  • According to Apple, the 16-inch Pro will provide 21 hours of video playing on batteries, which is “the longest battery life ever on a Mac notebook.”
  • When it comes to processing power, efficiency, and integrated graphics, Apple’s M1 processor has blasted competitors out of the water.

Apple unveils new MacBook

Apple has unveiled its new 16-inch MacBook Pro, which promises an improvement in both appearance and performance. Models will be available in silver and space grey starting at $2,499 next week.

The new Pro may be configured with Apple’s new 10-core processors, the M1 Pro and M1 Max, which have eight “high-performance” cores and two “high-efficiency” cores. The M1 Max features twice as many GPU cores as the Pro (32 vs. 16) and twice the memory bandwidth, as well as 64GB of unified memory (the Pro has 32GB).

New additions to the MacBook

The chassis has also been given a contemporary makeover. The gadget weighs 4.7 pounds and is 16.8mm thick. It has a 16.2-inch display. The Touch Bar has been replaced with physical keys, and there is an HDMI port, as well as a Thunderbolt 4 port and an SDXC slot, on the right side, with a headphone jack and two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left. According to Apple, it’s the most connectivity we’ve ever seen from a Mac laptop – the M1 Pro model supports up to two Pro Display XDRs, while the M1 Max configuration can handle up to three in addition to a 4K TV.

In November 2019, the first MacBook Pro 16 was released. It had a design that was quite similar to the previous 15-inch MacBook Pros and was powered by Intel’s 9th Generation CPUs (which are now two generations old). Reviewers lauded its excellent keyboard and acoustics, as well as its power, but bemoaned its restricted connection – there were just two Thunderbolt ports on either side.

There’s a new 1080p camera that, according to Apple, performs twice as well in low light than prior MacBook cameras. Spatial Audio is supported by a new six-speaker sound system, and the Liquid Retina XDR display has a reported peak brightness of 1,600 nits. Apple claims that the new cooling system can move “50% more air” than prior MacBooks with lower (and hence quieter) fan speeds.

Longest Battery life

According to Apple, the 16-inch Pro will provide 21 hours of video playing on batteries, which is “the longest battery life ever on a Mac notebook.” As battery performance varies depending on activity, we wouldn’t expect most people to get that result — but anything close would undoubtedly be category-topping. For simple juicing, the MacBook also supports MagSafe 3 and quick charge.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max must step into huge shoes. When it comes to processing power, efficiency, and integrated graphics, Apple’s M1 processor (which currently powers the MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iPad Pro, and the 2021 iMac) has blasted competitors out of the water.

FRANKFORT – Kentucky State University recently received the largest lump-sum donation in its history after a gift of $1 million from Diageo North America.

Diageo announced earlier this year that it was partnering with 25 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) around the country to create an innovative program to develop future leaders and shape a more equitable future. An Associated Press story reported that Diageo was giving four grants of $1 million, one grant of $500,000, another $500,000 to support programs across the colleges and 20 grants of $250,000.

The $1 million gift is the largest in the Kentucky State University Foundation, Incorporated’s history. The funds have been used to establish the Diageo Endowed Student Scholarship Fund to benefit the students of Kentucky State University. The intended purpose of the scholarship is to assist deserving students attending, or incoming to, Kentucky State University that display financial need.

The grant coincides with the Together Thorobreds 135th Anniversary Giving Campaign, which has a goal of $3.5 million over the course of the campaign. With the grant from Diageo and generous donations to kick off the campaign from students, Kentucky State University Board of Regents Chairperson Dr. Elaine Farris and Kentucky State University President M. Christopher Brown II, the University has reached 36 percent of this specific campaign goal. Even students are chipping in, as Kentucky State student Jacob Lilly was the first of many students to give to the campaign, lending a hand to future Thorobreds.

For 135 years, the College on the Hill has been a beacon of access to education and cultural significance in Frankfort, the Commonwealth’s capital city. Kentucky State invites all constituents – community members, students, employees, alumni, friends – to invest in the critical work of the University’s mission by making a donation.

As part of its 135th anniversary, Kentucky State hosted “Our History: Kentucky State University at 135” May 18 at 11 a.m. at David H. Bradford Hall in Carl H. Smith Auditorium. The event served as the debut of Kentucky State University’s history book, written by Dr. John Hardin.

The event featured a panel of members of the University community who have been witness to Kentucky State’s history. The conversation featured members sharing firsthand perspectives of the institution’s growth and challenges, with a special focus on the school’s increasing academic preeminence, the development of the campus, and growth in campus diversity, athletics, and more.

Support the Together Thorobreds campaign as Kentucky State celebrates its 135th anniversary.

FRANKFORT – For 135 years, Kentucky State University has provided access to education to help students go onward, move upward and advance forward.

Kentucky State’s three academic colleges offer more than 800 courses, leading to careers in science, education, medicine, business and more.

Renowned programs such as aquaculture, computer science or the Doctor of Nursing Practice program, the first of its kind at an HBCU, help enable productive lives within the diverse global economy.

As 2021 is Kentucky State’s 135th anniversary, the University is celebrating in a big way.

After navigating the effects of a global pandemic for the last year to deliver access to education, Kentucky State University has more reasons than ever to celebrate its 135th anniversary as an institution of higher education.

The pinnacle of the celebration was a panel of some of Kentucky State University’s living past presidents, moderated by KET’s Renee Shaw. Past interim president Dr. Aaron Thompson provided introductions for current president, Dr. M. Christopher Brown II; past president Dr. Mary Evans Sias and past president Raymond M. Burse. Dr. William H. Turner provided words for the occasion. Author Dr. John A. Hardin spoke about his recently released book, “The Pursuit of Excellence: Kentucky State University, 1886-2020.”

Hardin’s book examines the University’s history from its early days when it was an idea to the high-water marks and present-day achievements that propel the institution forward. The book carries readers through each name change of the institution, from the first days as the State Normal School for Colored Persons with three teachers and 55 students to today’s Kentucky State University with 160 faculty and 2,300 students.

The panel discussion covered a broad range of topics including what each president considers his or her greatest accomplishment at Kentucky State; the challenges of being a president in higher education; the importance of working with political leaders; fundraising; the legacy of Rufus Ballard Atwood; and the future of Kentucky State.

Another part of the 135th anniversary celebration is a new partnership with the iconic Kentucky soda brand, Ale-8-One Bottling Company. Ale-8-One, local producer of Kentucky’s original ginger and citrus soft drink sold in their signature green glass bottles, is also celebrating its 95th anniversary this year. Kentucky State and Ale-8-One will highlight the partnership with a series of collaborations throughout the year.

Special recognitions at Founder’s Day and Homecoming and Homecoming will recognize the anniversary, as well as the 135th Green and Gold Gala.

From its modest beginnings as a small normal school for the training of African American teachers, Kentucky State University has grown into a land-grant and liberal arts institution that prepares a diverse student population to compete in a multifaceted, ever-changing global society.

Today, Kentucky State University is led by its 18th president, Dr. M. Christopher Brown II. It is a public institution with an enrollment of approximately 2,300 students and 160 full-time faculty members. The University’s diverse mix of faculty, staff, and students has made Kentucky State the most diverse public institution in the Commonwealth, and among the most diverse nationwide.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has partnered with Sommet Education for an innovative Hospitality Challenge. The initiative will grant 30 scholarships for world-class education programmes and support career climbers and switchers, entrepreneurs and innovators develop themselves and their projects and so help drive tourism’s recovery.

Around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought tourism to a standstill. Now, as the sector restarts, this competition is designed to identify ideas and individuals capable of accelerating recovery while promoting inclusivity and sustainability in the sector to invent the hospitality of tomorrow. Selection criteria include the degree of disruptiveness, project maturity, and potential for implementation, as well as viability, scalability, digitalization, sustainability, and the potential to attract the interest of investors. The competition will focus on four different categories:

  • Luxury travels, goods, and services
  • Hotels and hotel-related operations: small to medium-sized properties, family businesses
  • Food and Beverage: restaurants, catering, delivery services, and retail
  • Smart Real Estate: small to medium-sized properties and family businesses

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The tourism sector is a source of employment for many millions. Jobs in tourism provide opportunity, empowerment, and equality, including for women, youth and people living in rural communities. As we restart tourism, the time is right to rethink hospitality and to identify and implement new ideas to make the sector more inclusive and sustainable. The UNWTO Hospitality Challenge will do just this.”

Benoit-Etienne Domenget, Chief Executive Officer at Sommet Education added: “This crisis presents us with an opportunity to reconcile visions of the world that have been too long opposed to inventing the hospitality of tomorrow. We believe education is the foundation of a more hospitable world. Offering scholarships is a contribution to the recovery of the hospitality economy, by accelerating the personal development of talented people with creative views, supporting their vision, and revamp hospitality.”

The competition is open now and will close at the end of August. A Selection Committee made up of an international network of investors, entrepreneurs, and experts from UNWTO Member, Affiliate Members, and strategic allies, as well as from representatives of Sommet Education, will then choose 30 finalists.

The 30 finalists will be eligible for full scholarships in 15 different programmes in Hospitality, Culinary and Pastry Arts Management, (Bachelors, Masters, MBAs) offered in the world-class academic institutions of Sommet Education: Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland and London, Les Roches Crans-Montana in Switzerland, Les Roches Marbella in Spain and École Ducasse in France.

Among the 30 winners, the top three most innovative entrepreneurial projects will be granted funding to support their initial development. These projects will be funded by Eurazeo, a leading global investment group from which Sommet Education is a portfolio company. This will offer the three winners even more chances of success for their projects.

As we know the coronavirus pandemic is not going to end soon, masks have now become mandatory across much of the world. It is strongly recommended in hopes of stopping the spread of the coronavirus. However, it’s recommendations have been controversial in some areas due to low supplies. Masks have been used by aware people, but unfortunately, these new medicare accessories have given people a new item to litter.

The rise of disposal masks and gloves is adding to the glut of plastic pollution threatening the health of oceans. Marine life is already struggling against the pollution of cigarette butts, empty bottles, and discarded food wrappers. In addition to these, rubber gloves and surgical masks are now littering many city streets as well. Discarded items on the street easily get washed down drains during storms, and eventually, end up in the ocean or other waterways. Surgical masks and gloves are found damaging to the environment because they are often made out of fabrics and plastics. Because they are not biodegradable and come in colors, they attract marine animals.

In Asia, these masks and gloves are in use for a few months now, but conservation groups are reporting that these items are already making their way into the nearby waterways and oceans. In February, the conservation group OceanAsia posted photos of Hong Kong beaches, where gloves and masks were scattered all over the sand, and floating in the water.

“The way I see these masks in the environment is just another addition to the ever-growing marine debris crisis our oceans are facing. No better, no worse, just shouldn’t be there in the first place. I’m waiting to hear of the first necropsy that finds masks inside a dead marine animal. It’s not a question of if, but when,” Gary Stokes, The Independent.

A similar trend have been noticed by some environmentalists in the United States, as the use of masks and gloves continues to be more common in the country. Maria Algarra, the founder of the Miami-based environmentalist group “Clean This Beach Up,” has started a hashtag campaign called #TheGloveChallenge. She has encouraged people to take photos of discarded gloves and masks to illustrate how much of a widespread problem this littering is.

Algarra has received nearly 2,000 photos of discarded gloves and masks from all over the world. In some cases, people have even pitched in and helped to clear up the discarded items, but Algarra has advised her supporters to only pick up the items if they have personal protective equipment.

“With the glove challenge, it’s about education. That’s the key for us to do better as a community and as humans. We can’t expect people to change their ways if they don’t know what they’re doing wrong. Plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces until micro-plastic is everywhere. It’s toxic and it’s in what we’re eating and drinking. There’s no way to clean up micro-plastics. Once trash makes it into the ocean and breaks into smaller pieces, it’s almost impossible to take it back,” Algarra said.

Citizenship by Investment serves the nation through socio-economic advancement

The Dominican government is promoting abroad studies to empower the nation. The comment made in an interview for Dominica’s Broadcasting Service (DBS), where Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit revealed how Dominica’s Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Program has supported Dominican children for abroad education. According to the PM proudly announced that CBI has contributed around $26 million in the education sector for students studying overseas in countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Prime Minister Skerrit later emphasized how CBI had helped the island to recover from the devastation that occurred by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The collected fund was used for rebuilding thousands of homes, as well as for building 5,000 new climate-resistant homes under the ‘Housing Revolution’ initiative. The initiative for new home-constructions created jobs for thousands of needy people. CBI did not stop here as it also helped Dominica to establish and expand its eco-tourism sector and improving employment prospects with long-term effect.

CBI committed to withstand and fight extremes

Apart from distributing funds in abroad studies, the rest generated funds from the program are channeled into the socio-economic advancement of the island including job creation, healthcare, climate change, ecotourism, and infrastructural development.

During the interview, Skerrit expressed his sentiment for CBI as he commented that- “CBI has been a lifeline for Dominica.” He says the small Caribbean island’s remarkable recovery after Hurricane Maria in 2017 would not have been possible “had it not been for the Citizenship By Investment Program, which demonstrated its resilience…., within 90 days after the hurricane, we were back in business with respect to the CBI program,” stated the PM during a vine-cutting ceremony at the newly reopened, CBI-approved Jungle Bay resort.

Global recognition for serving socio-economic

Established in 1993, Dominica’s CBI Program has been enabling carefully vetted global individuals and their immediate relatives to acquire second citizenship. The benefits of citizenship are acquired through either a one-time non-refundable contribution to the government’s Economic Diversification Fund or buying into selected real estate, currently counting seven unique hotels. The government-legislated program is one of the oldest in existence and has been internationally recognized by experts at the Financial Times’ PWM magazine for its high efficiency, affordability, and due diligence standards. Honoring the efforts, a special independent report titled CBI Index, ranked Dominica as the world’s best offering for economic citizenship for the last two consecutive years.

Explaining the flexibility online learning will provide to students

Advances in technology always come with questions: what this can be used for, what the possibilities are, and where its seen is going, are the basic questions asked when the latest technological developments are released. One of the major areas people think when it comes to new technology is how it can be applied to the education sector. What can technology do for students and teachers alike, learn, study, and demonstrate? Audio-Visual classrooms expert, IVCi, discusses what the future of audio-visual technology has in store for higher education.

The collaboration of audio-visual learning designed to provide different educational environments, including higher education and corporate training. Some are as follows:

  • Flipped classrooms: Flipped classrooms are becoming increasingly common in higher education where students are utilizing online materials to learn the syllabus and attending the class as a form of discussion and idea-sharing. This learning style empowers students with the ability to learn and absorb content, anywhere, anytime, and anyway, they most prefer.
  • Unlimited access to education materials: Education is a sector where content change is a natural process, as new developments in politics, economics, science, and business happen every day. Specialized collections of educational content updated regularly help students staying up-to-date with the latest developments in any student or professor’s selected field. Thus, online learning content is accurate, up-to-date, and most importantly, available.
  • Interactive lessons: The most important aspect of learning is-it should be interactive with the materials in a new and unique way, giving students a more personal learning experience. Technology has served students providing the interactive lessons as educational materials are now available on smartphones and laptops with ease.
  • Virtual and Augmented reality: Virtual and augmented learning experience is one of the most exciting experiences students like. The increasing quality and decreasing the cost of virtual and augmented reality experiences will soon make students able to thrive as never before in history.
